For more than 150 years, Market Street has served as the center of San Francisco's commercial and cultural life. Amidst the roar of taxis, buses and trains, people from around the world and all walks of life mix and meet. But is there space for nature? As San Francisco leaders prepare to redesign Market Street, I worked with a team to transform one of Market Street's grittiest bustling corners into a lush oasis of native trees and plants. The Pop-Up Forest helped spark the public’s imagination and convince City officials of the need to create a greener leafier city. The film documents an inspiring story of grassroots advocacy and the transformative power of nature in one of the most unlikely locations. This is a presentation I gave at the Mayor's Data & Innovation Awards Ceremony in City Hall (2017). My team was presented with an award by the late Mayor Edwin M. Lee for the San Francisco Street Tree Census - the first-ever inventory of the City's 125,000 street trees.
I organized a tour on the history of San Francisco's trees with University of California, Berkeley Professor Emeritus Joe McBride. The tour was filmed by San Francisco Public Works TV and edited into this short educational video.
The City of San Francisco was awarded the Arbor Day Foundation's Champion of Trees Award (2018). This video celebrates the success of San Francisco Public Works' and non-profit Friends of the Urban Forest's efforts to create a new citywide street tree program.
